FRP修理のはなし -About FRP repair
むかし子どもとヨットをやってました。と、言うか、私はコーチボートに乗り、子どもたちがセーリングしていたわけで、子どもたちは練習でもレースでも頻繁にヨットをガッチンコするのです。そんな時は大人の出番、FRPのヨットの破損箇所を天気の良い日を選んで修理をすることになるのです。トラバントがFRPでできていると知って、このクルマだったら自分で修理できるなあ、と思ったりしていたら、ふと昔のことを思い出しました。

壊れて修理が必要になると、先輩父兄からは「修理方法は時間をかけるかお金をかけるか、それだけのこと」と言われました。私はお金がないこともありましたが、修理は大掛かりな模型制作のようなもので意外と楽しくやれましたので、時間をかける派でした。でも当然プロほど上手には仕上げられないので、子どもたちには申し訳ないけど、いつもつぎはぎだらけのようなフネに乗せてました、と、申し訳なくないか、ぶつけるお前たちが悪いんだよ！自爆ならまだしも人のフネにぶつけて、こっちが悪ければお金かけて相手のフネも直してあげなくちゃならないし、時間も金も一緒に吹っ飛んで行くのです。

私のやってた修理は、破損部分をグラインダーで修理しやすいようの整形して、ゲルコートにファイバーチップを混ぜて破損箇所に塗り込めます。厚みが必要なところはグラスシートにゲルコートを浸らせて少しづつ載せていきます。乾燥させてからグラインダーとヤスリで整形し、ペーパーがけで段差を均します。サフ塗った後に周りと同色の塗装して、乾燥後再度ペーパーがけして完成なのですが。とにかく乾燥に時間がかかるのと臭いがきつくマスクと手袋は必須です。当然着衣はゲルコートでベトベトになりますのでそのつもりの格好も必要です。私の場合は仕事を有給休暇をとって、ハーバーで作業してましたので大きな問題はなかったのですが、やるとなると正直、いろいろ大変です。お金があればやってもらったほうが良いでしょうが、先に書いたとおり私にはこの作業が模型の要領と同じだったので楽しかったのです。今となっては有給休暇を割りと自由に取れたあの頃の環境が羨ましいです。

After drying, I fix the form with a grinder and a file and polish it with sandpaper afterwards. After having painted with surfacer; of the color same as a yacht paint it, and polish it with sandpaper, and, after drying, is completion. Drying takes time. And the preparation for mask and gloves is necessary because they smell. The clothes are polluted with a gel coat by all means. I worked in yacht harbor in a paid vacation. Probably you should have you pay money, and an expert do it. However, as for me, this repair is fun because I resemble modelling. I am envious of those days when I was able to repair it in a paid vacation.
ヨットはハルの修理以外でも、セイルやリグ類の修理は日常茶飯事で、いろいろな工具を持ってました。私にとってはセイリングよりもフネ作りや修理のほうが魅力があります。フネ職人を仕事にすれば仕事と趣味を両立できるかな？まあ、それはないよね。
