Let sleeping dogs lie.
「触らぬ神に祟りなし（さわらぬかみにたたりなし）」。言い古されたことわざだが、含蓄がある言葉である。「触らぬ」とは、物事に関わりを持つという意味だが、人と人の接触、クルマのクラックション、パッシングといった間接的な行動も含め、相手に不快感を与えるすべて。「神」とは、人に限らず感情を有する動植物すべてを含めた対象。「祟り」も千差万別、些細なことも人生を変えるほどになる可能性も十分にありうる。そんなことを意識しだしたのは、ごく最近。これまでそんなこと意識していなかった。人とのトラブルは避けるべき、百害あって一利なし。これまで何事もなかったことは幸い。先人の知恵や教訓は、生きるうえで貴重である。
“Sawaranu Kamini Tatarinashi (Don’t touch the gods, they won’t curse you)” is a Japanese proverb, but in English it seems to have the same meaning as “Let sleeping dogs lie.” “Don’t touch” refers to indirect actions, such as cracking or passing a car, that cause discomfort and trouble to the other person. “God” refers not only to people, but to anything that has feelings. “Curses” can range from minor things to life-changing problems. I wasn’t aware of this until recently, but trouble with others should be avoided. I’m fortunate that I haven’t had any so far. Proverbs are valuable in life.
